The Icom A16 is an entry-level air band handheld built as a practical flight-line companion for a student pilot, letting preflight communication with the tower happen from the ramp instead of burning engine hours and fuel to do it from the cockpit.
A 2400mAh Li-ion battery runs for over 17 hours on a charge in typical use, and the radio ships with a sit-in rapid charger to keep it topped off between flights. The compact, waterproof body is built for one-handed operation on the flight line, as a cockpit backup, or for ground crew use, and it’s rated to IP67/54 and MIL-STD-810-G for genuine outdoor durability rather than just fair-weather use.
Built-in Bluetooth adds hands-free operation with a compatible headset, and a 1500mW speaker keeps transmissions clear and audible even in a noisy hangar or on an active ramp. RF output runs 6 watts PEP (1.8 watts carrier), and the radio supports both 8.33 kHz and 25 kHz channel spacing, with 200 memory channels and an LCD and key backlight for night operation.
