The Marttiini Black Lumberjack has a 3.5-inch carbon steel blade at 7.875 inches overall in a textured black stained birch handle, a nickel silver ferrule and a silver embossed black leather belt sheath. Made in Finland.
The ferrule is a metal collar where the blade meets the handle, and on a hidden tang knife it takes the load that would otherwise split the wood, a detail Finnish makers have used for generations. Birch is the traditional Nordic handle timber, light and close-grained, and staining it black is a modern departure from the natural finish.
Carbon steel takes a keener edge than stainless and comes back quickly on a stone, though it will darken over time and needs to be dried after use. Marttiini has worked in Rovaniemi since 1928, and the embossed leather sheath reflects that. Explore more Camp and Field Knives.
